Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City
One of the most heavily anticipated fixtures in this midweek Premier League round pits Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City against each other at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Back to North London following a thumping 4-1 win at newcomers Ipswich Town, Tottenham will be out to post four consecutive Premier League victories for the first time this season. Indeed, Ange Postecoglou’s charges defeated Manchester United 1-0 in their most recent home league outing to halt a dreadful seven-game winless run in such games (D2, L5). Buoyed by this uptick in form, Spurs will be out to complete an unlikely league double over Manchester City after a remarkable 4-0 triumph in November’s reverse fixture. Despite their rotten home form, they’ve racked up three wins from their last four competitive matches in North London (L1), keeping a clean sheet on each occasion.
In the meantime, Manchester City’s disastrous season fell off a cliff last week. Days after Real Madrid knocked them out of the Champions League playoff round, Liverpool humbled Pep Guardiola’s charges 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, casting further doubt on their top-four hopes. Guardiola’s men have alternated between winning (2) and losing (2) across their last four Premier League outings but enter this clash narrowly inside the top four, courtesy of a superior goal difference to Newcastle. Worryingly, the Citizens have only won five of their 13 away league games this season (D3, L5), with four of those triumphs coming against teams ending the weekend in the bottom five!
